If you’re a horse racing fanatic, you’ll be happy to know that there are plenty of places in Las Vegas to catch the action of the May 1st Kentucky Derby (pretty much every sportsbook and bar out there). It’s even better if you can get Mint Julep to take part in this promotion on Derby Day. Here are a few to check out and when you’re home for your watch party, a twist to try from Las Vegas master mixologist Tony Abou-Ganim.
At the Eureka (520 E. Fremont St., 702.570.3660), Enjoy a Buffalo Trace Mint Julep Cocktail on May 1st for only $ 7! Bargain!
Down Las Vegas Boulevard PT’s Wings & Sports and View Lounge at The STRAT (800.998.6937) has several specials to commemorate the day: a traditional mint julep for $ 12, a bourbon chocolate walnut cake for $ 9, and a Woodford bourbon cider martini for $ 16. And with screens throughout the pub, you won’t miss a minute of the race.
Golden Circle Sports Betting & Bar (Treasure Island, 702.894.7111) has fan specials on April 30th and May 1st such as $ 10 mint juleps, $ 10 shots, $ 8 drafts, $ 10 bottles, and 4 for 30 Dollar Beer Bucket Angry Orchard Crisp Apple Hard Cider.
If you’ve already been PT’s gold (702.899.4330, 2890 Bicentennial Pkwy.) You may have collected raffle tickets for certain prizes. This continues until April 30th, and on May 1st, winners will be drawn for a 55-inch TV, VGK jersey, and $ 100 in cash.
If you’re staying home, try cocktail wizard Abou-Ganim’s apricot julep, made with Town Branch Kentucky bourbon. “The nice thing about Mint-Julep is its simplicity,” Abou-Ganim said in a press release. It offers a timeless template – a blank canvas, so to speak.
“The mint julep challenges the bartenders’ art to give their own interpretations without straying too far from its cherished roots,” said Abou-Ganim. The Cocktail Wizard was one of 13 well-known mixologists across the country who created variations of the julep for Town Branch Kentucky Bourbon.
Here are the ingredients for Abou-Ganim’s Apricot Julep:
1.5 ounces Town Branch Kentucky Straight Bourbon
5 ounces Marie Brizard Apry Liqueur
1 ounce simple syrup
10-12 fresh green mint leaves
3 slices of fresh apricot.
Served with crushed ice, of course!
