17-year-old Damari White, Boys and Girls Club 2021 Nevada State Youth of the Year.

The Boys & Girls Club’s “Youth of the Year” shows the impact the organization has on young people and their lives. To receive the prestigious award, club members must have the following characteristics:

  • guide
  • service
  • Academic excellence
  • Healthy lifestyle

Damari’s story involves facing adversity at a young age and going through many hardships such as food insecurity and escalating violence in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan. But after his family moved to Boulder Pines and joined the Boulder Highway Clubhouse, he became a standout club member and gracefully transformed into a leader among his peers. He serves as Keystone President and directs youth programs like Black History Month, Money Matters, CareerLaunch, and more.

In the spring, Damari will graduate from Chaparral High School and attend Mayville State University, where he will play soccer and pursue a major in journalism and communication.

Nevada HAND sat down with Damari to learn more about its history. Watch the video here or read the attached press release.
