The Las Vegas Raiders started last year’s season with high expectations. Despite winning their last game, the season didn’t end as Silver and Black had hoped.
In the course of the season, the defense seemed to fade, so that coach Jon Gruden had to fire his defensive coordinator Paul Günther before the end of the season.
This year the Raiders took a different approach. The Silver and Black took advantage of this off-season to overhaul their defense by bringing in veteran acquisitions, putting most of their draft picks into defense, and some of its veterans needing reinforcement.
“First we have to come together as a whole, as a defense. We have to set goals, we have to set standards and we have to create an identity. We start there. We can just build on that,” said Raiders cornerback Trayvon Mullen, who has a more prominent role in wants to play defense of the raiders.
The pressure to turn things around in the NFL is a difficult task. It is difficult to do if the defense problems persist after Günther’s termination. Injuries did not go away and below-average players remained on the roster.
Mullen believes this is the year the players can come together and lay a foundation for defense to move forward.
“I think we have people in the building who can do this and do the job. We have people like Cory Littleton, Nick Kwiatkoski, Nicholas Morrow. Well, we have me in secondary, we have Johnathan Abram, Maxx Crosby, Clelin Ferrell “We just have to put it together, we have to come together – we have to lay a foundation for our defense group,” said Mullen.
The Raiders brought in Los Angeles Chargers Defense Coordinator Gus Bradley to bring back to life a defense that self-destructed a year ago.
Silver and Black finished the season in most defensive categories.
A culture shift is developing early in the off-season to carry it into the 2021 season.
