Woman killed in western Las Vegas Valley

A woman was hit and killed in an accident before her body was found near a mall in western Las Vegas Valley on Saturday morning, police said.

Just before 8 a.m. on Saturday, a manager found the woman’s body on the rocks in front of the store in a supermarket near Rampart and Charleston, the Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement.

Homicide detectors were originally called in to help with the investigation but turned the case over to transportation investigators, Metro Lt. Ray Spencer.

Police believe the woman, a 22-year-old Las Vegas resident, was crossing Charleston west of Rampart in front of a zebra crossing when she was hit by a Dodge Ram exiting the scene in 2003.

Suspect Richard Modolo, 69, was arrested later on Saturday and, according to prison records, is accused of failing to stop at the site of a fatal accident.

He is being held without bail and is due to appear in court on Sunday.

Note: In a previous version, the community where the body was found was incorrectly identified.
